10 Rules of Profitable Google Ads

Google Ads Basics

👆 This video goes through the most important key ideas on running Google Ads campaigns.

If you do not do these, your ads will not work.

If you do these, your ads will work.

And now, for the the full 10 commandments of Google Ads

1. Laser-Targeted Intent

  • Start with keyword planner. Add in 10 keywords and get list of searches, their volume and competition.

    • Pick ones with intent to convert (e.g. therapist near me) and skip ones that don’s (e.g. therapist salary, free psychological assessment)

    • Group together keywords where same ads and landing pages could work (e.g. “tailored suits for men manhattan”, “bespoke suits for men NYC” “mens custom suits new york” )

    • Focus on high-intent keywords (long-tail, exact match) and exclude irrelevant searches with negative keywords.

  • Use audience segmentation (demographics, behaviors) to target users ready to buy.

2. Unbreakable Ad-to-Landing Page Continuity

  • Ads and landing pages must mirror messaging (headlines, offers, keywords) to avoid user confusion.

  • Good:

    • Keyword: “custom linen suits for men Austin”

    • Ad: “The best mens linen suits in Austin Texas”

    • Landing page: example.com/linen-suits - “Gallery of our linen suits”

  • Bad

    • Keyword: “custom linen suits for men Austin”

    • Ad: “Suits for sale”

    • Landing page: website homepage with generic information

  • Landing pages: Speed + mobile optimization, clear CTA, minimal friction, and trust signals (reviews).

3. Profit-Driven Bidding

  • Automated bidding (Target ROAS/CPA) after conversion data is reliable.

  • Ruthlessly reallocate budget to top-performing campaigns/keywords; kill underperformers fast.

4. Atomic-Level Testing

  • A/B test one variable at a time (headlines, CTAs, landing page layouts) to pinpoint what works.

  • Scale winners; discard losers.

5. Obsess Over Quality Score

  • Relevance trumps all: Keywords must tightly align with ad copy and landing page content.

  • Higher Quality Score = lower CPC + better ad rank.

6. Track Real Metrics

  • Ignore vanity metrics (impressions, clicks). Focus on ROAS, CPA, conversion rate.

  • Set up accurate conversion tracking (Google Tag Manager + Analytics).

7. Ad Extensions = Free Real Estate

  • Use sitelinks, callouts, and structured snippets to dominate SERP space and boost CTR.

8. Competitor Dissection

  • Spy on competitors' ads/keywords (SEMrush, Auction Insights), then out-position them with sharper USP messaging.

9. Scarcity/Urgency in Copy

  • "Last 3 in stock" or "Sale ends tonight" triggers FOMO and accelerates decisions.

10. Relentless Iteration

  • No "set and forget". Weekly optimizations based on data. Test → Learn → Repeat.

Bottom Line:

Google Ads is a data-driven auction. Win by targeting precisely, messaging ruthlessly, and optimizing obsessively. Profit is the only metric that matters.
